Targeted Glycemic Control In The Hospital :
From Evidence To Results

Purpose
To provide education on current rationale and strategies for hospital glycemic control teams in order to enable institutions to initiate a safe and effective quality improvement program or optimize the efficacy of pre-existing projects targeting inpatient glycemic control.

Hospital Administrators and/or Resources Management personnel– working to support a quality improvement project in glycemic control
Learning Objectives













To provide an overview of the current evidence -  based rationale for for targeted glycemic control in the hospital setting

To present the range of current practice and key elements (including processes, glucometrics and education) being utilized in successful implementation of multidisciplinary glycemic control programs throughout the inpatient spectrum of care

To enable the glycemic control champion to make the case for team support to hospital administration

To discuss strategies for patient survival skills self-management education to meet JCAHO expectations prior to discharge to the outpatient setting
 

Michelle F. Magee, MD, CDE
Co-Course Director

As Director of the MedStar Diabetes Institute, Dr. Magee oversees diabetes clinical, education and research programs for seven hospitals in theWashington, DC and Baltimore, Md area. Dr. Magee was a member of the American Diabetes Association Writing Group for the 2004 Technical Review on the Management of Diabetes and Hyperglycemia in Hospitals published in Diabetes Care.  She is also a member of the Society of Hospital Medicine Glycemic Resource Room advisory group.  Dr Magee is actively involved in hospital glycemic management initiatives including implementation of insulin therapy and education initiatives and investigator initiated trials in this field.

In her capacity as Medical Director of the MedStar Research Institute’s diabetes clinical trials unit at Washington Hospital Center, Dr Magee conducts research in diabetes therapies, diabetes and heart disease and diabetes education, with a focus on minority populations. Her work has been recognized via 2007 awards from the Metropolitan Washington Public Health Association and an ADA National Achievement Award for Outstanding Outreach.

Dr Magee is an Associate Professor of Medicine, Georgetown University School of Medicine and Healthcare Sciences and immediate Past-President of the Mid-Atlantic Affiliate of the ADA.

Stephen Clement, MD
Co-Course Director

Dr. Clement is the Director of the Georgetown Diabetes Center at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, DC. Dr Clement chaired the American Diabetes Association Writing Group for the 2004 Technical Review on the Management of Diabetes and Hyperglycemia in Hospitals published in Diabetes Care. He speaks nationally and internationally on hospital glycemic management.  Dr Clement is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Georgetown University School of Medicine and Healthcare Sciences, where he serves as Glycemic Champion for the Georgetown University Hospital Glycemic Control Team.

He is also actively involved in the conduct of clinical trials for diabetes therapies, clinical care and teaching.  He is Past-President of the Mid-Atlantic Affiliate of the American Diabetes Association and an active member of the ADA.
